Presentation of biogas and the Company's development objectives in this sector
Through biogas, TotalEnergies wishes to develop renewable energy sources to respond to climate change.
TotalEnergies
The sun, the wind, water and the heat of the earth are inexhaustible sources of energy that are now well known to us. But there is another, from an organic source, that is less familiar. Which is generated by human activities and their byproducts that nobody knows what to do with. Which uses microorganisms, via anaerobic digestion, to turn waste into energy and biofertilizer.
This virtuous circle, that uses biomass and returns to the planet what it gave to us, is the circle of biogas. TotalEnergies intends to develop biogas as a low carbon, renewable partner to natural gas. It covers all uses of this fuel, including sustainable transport on land and sea.
From organic waste collection to the production of electricity and heat, biomethane, green fuel and natural fertilizer, biogas is one component of a circular economy that benefits us all. For us, by us, close to us. That is the philosophy of TotalEnergies which, at the heart of each region, designs and co-builds every project together with its farming and agri-food industry partners, local authorities and all other stakeholders.
TotalEnergies’ ambition is to expand this virtuous circle by producing 10 TWh of biomethane by 2030, equivalent to the annual gas needs of almost 2 million inhabitants. A major biogas player in France and Poland today; in Europe and worldwide tomorrow. Alongside solar and wind, we can now also call on biogas to combine our energies and accelerate our response to climate change.
